Project Overview:
This kitchen flooring project in Midhurst, West Sussex started as what looked like a straightforward floor replacement but quickly turned into a full subfloor restoration.
Once we lifted the existing vinyl, it became clear there was a much bigger issue underneath. The subfloor had been failing for some time due to trapped moisture and poor previous installation, with no proper damp proofing in place.
What seemed like a simple job required us to strip everything back and rebuild the floor properly, ensuring a solid, level and protected base ready for a long lasting finish.

When we arrived there was a vinyl floor already down. At first glance it didn’t look too bad but as soon as we started lifting it it was obvious something wasn’t right.
Underneath the vinyl was rotting ply and a failing subfloor. The whole thing had clearly been holding moisture for a long time. There was no damp proof membrane and the moisture had been trapped underneath which had completely destroyed parts of the floor.

At that point there was no option but to strip everything back properly.
To do the job properly we had to remove the entire kitchen, take out all the rotten flooring and ply and get right back down to the concrete base. Luckily the kitchen hadn’t been fitted particularly well before so it came out fairly easily which worked in the customer’s favour.
We then ground down the high spots in the concrete, filled the low areas and prepped everything so we had a solid base to work from.
One of the biggest issues here was moisture so we made sure it was sorted properly this time. We installed a full damp proof membrane and then applied a moisture sensitive latex screed across the whole floor. That left us with a flat solid and protected surface ready for the new floor.
Once the floor was sorted we reinstalled the kitchen but improved things while we were at it. We refit the units properly, sanded and re oiled the worktops and installed new taps, a new stopcock and an outside tap. There were a few leaks and issues there before so it made sense to deal with them while everything was out.
With everything prepped properly we installed the new floor using Quick Step EL896 Natural Varnished Oak. It’s a great choice for kitchens as it’s hard wearing, looks great and is easy to maintain.
What started as a simple flooring job turned into a full subfloor replacement, proper damp protection that was missing before, a completely level and solid base, a reinstalled and improved kitchen and a high quality new floor that will last.
